MAIN STREET TO HOST ‘DOWNTOWN CLEAN UP DAY’ APRIL 19
UNION CITY, TENN. – Main Street Union City is inviting the community to clean up downtown streets and alleys on Sat., April 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This initiative ties in with Earth Day, which is on April 22, where people throughout the world come together to clean up their communities.
During this event, volunteers will be assigned a section of downtown to focus on for cleaning efforts. Main areas include S. First St., Washington Ave., around the Obion County Courthouse and alleyways. Tasks include planting flowers, pulling weeds from sidewalks and garden beds, and picking up trash throughout the downtown area.
“Having our community members join us on this clean up day gives us all a sense of pride for the downtown district,” said Katie Graves, Main Street Executive Director. “We are proud of how our downtown is being revitalized, and through clean up efforts like this, our downtown will sparkle even more.”
Century 21 and Union City Parks & Recreation are partnering with Main Street for clean up day. Century 21 is providing waters, snacks and a fun “Chalk Art Contest” in front of their building, located at 204 W. Washington Ave. during this event, as well as other special events for families. UC Parks & Recreation is assisting with planting flowers in the large planters on S. First St., as well as donating bags and manpower.
“As a board member and committee chair for this event, I want to encourage our friends and neighbors to join us in these efforts as we clean up our downtown district,” said Rita Hussey, board member of Main Street and resident of Union City. “This is a great opportunity to be downtown and support our local restaurants and businesses after the event.”
To wrap up the day’s events, Main Street is inviting volunteers and community members to attend the reveal of the first “Dumpster Art” project completed by art students at Union City High School thanks to a grant from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). This art initiative was inspired by the dumpsters in Paris, Tenn., to add vibrancy and art to the downtown district in a unique way. The reveal will be at 12:30 p.m. at the corner of Church and Depot Streets.
