The History of Downtown Union City

An excerpt from Hardy M. Graham’s welcome letter in the 1954 Centennial Celebration.

“To the city that many of you call home, and to the place that we are sure brings back memories of former days; the days of your youth, and the faces of loved ones.

We are proud that you have come back to renew old friendships, and to be with us in the Centennial Celebration. Our city began back in 1854 as a place where two trails crossed and then later two railroads. Homes, stores, churches and business structures were built and new families settled here. Their main aim being to establish a friendly village or community. Their great desire was to love in peace with their families and friends. These various movements led to the small city, as we are today.

Soon, trade was established, civic pride grew, and later the city was known by its people. We believe we have one of the finest little cities in the land, and its citizenship is equal to the best.”

Today, we still believe we have some of the finest people in all the land living and working in Union City, Tennessee. Our downtown is vibrant with restored buildings, new businesses, exciting activities and an exciting atmosphere. Our city leaders are focused on making great decisions that benefits its citizens, as well as prepare the next generation of families to grow and prosper here in Union City.
