Celebrate Preservation Month 2024

Main Street Union City’s mission is to revitalize the economy, enhance the historical charm and preserve the architectural heritage of the downtown business district of Union City, Tennessee.

As part of “Preservation Month” throughout the month of May, we will be highlighting different projects of preservation as well as individual buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Fun fact: downtown Union City has five on this list!

Part of our mission at Main Street is to preserve the architectural heritage of the downtown district. So, how do we do that?

Find individuals who have a passion for historic buildings and preservation.
Apply for historic grants that cater to your downtown’s needs.

At Main Street Union City, we are fortunate to have both. David Ring has been an extraordinary individual who has been the catalyst for the new energy and preservation work happening in our downtown. From the luxurious Nailling Apartments, Vantage Coffee Roasters and The Market, to the build-out of a new microbrewery, Mr. Ring has made a huge economic impact in our preservation efforts.

In November 2023, Main Street Union City received the Downtown Improvement Grant (DIG) from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development. This reimbursable $300,000 grant will help preserve the facades of 13 of the 100-year-old buildings on S. First Street. You will begin seeing work on these downtown buildings this summer.

But we cannot forget why the preservation efforts matter for our downtown – it’s for you. We want you to be proud of your downtown district, invite your friends and out-of-town guests to see what’s new, and share the exciting changes happening in your downtown. Not only will these changes affect you today, but they will also affect the generations who will choose to make Union City and Obion County their home.

So celebrate “Preservation Month” with us! Look for fun facts and stories on our social media pages throughout the month of May, and be sure to share with us your favorite memories of downtown. We look forward to the exciting preservation changes to come!
